If you are familiar with the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, then you probably already know that they are most commonly recommended as a way to enhance heart health. While much of the medical population refuses to officially endorse hypothetical (but highly researched and heavily suspected) ideas about omega 3s and their positive impact on dementia, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes, the American Heart Association (AMA) itself recommends that you make sure to get enough omega 3s in your diet via consumption of fatty fish like salmon, tuna or mackerel. Of course, in order to consume the proper amount of omega 3 fatty acids, you would have to eat nearly 2 pounds of these fish a day, so many people opt for an omega 3 supplement instead.
However, until now omega 3’s have largely been seen as a preventative measure when it came to heart health. According to a recent study published August 11, 2009 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids after a heart attack or other heart issues or episodes may be far more profound than previously expected. The study followed its subjects for as long as 30 years in some cases, and determined that those who had heart attacks and then took a daily omega 3 supplement had as much as a 30 percent reduction in cardiovascular-related death, meaning that they were far less likely to die from heart problems after their episode if they treated the issue using appropriate measures that included omega 3 fish oil supplements.
Of course, the best option would be to avoid the heart attack in the first place by practicing responsible health practices and taking your omega 3 fish oil long before your heart issues ever developed. However, this new study indicates that if you have already experienced heart problems, it is not too late for you to help your heart out by starting an omega 3 regimen.
